GEORGIA METH PROJECT
Together IIAG Members Make A Difference

At our Board Meeting in March, we heard about a problem that has had an enormous impact on our state and on our industry.
Throughout Georgia, methamphetamines, or Meth, use is destroying young lives and families, while inflicting a staggering financial toll.

Based on a 2009 study by the RAND Corporation, Meth use is estimated to cost the state $1.3 billion each year in law enforcement and incarceration, health care, family and child services, loss of workplace productivity and other costs.

The Meth Project is a large-scale prevention program aimed to reduce Teen Meth use through an aggressive advertising and awareness campaign.  The television and radio advertisements are frightening.  They run on prime-time spots and are very effectively raising awareness of the dangers of this drug.

The Meth Project was first piloted in Montana five years ago.  The results are remarkable:  Teen Meth use has declined by 63% and adult Meth use by 72%.  Montana now ranks 39th in the nation for Meth use, down from 5th before the campaign began. The Project was launched here in Georgia just last month and it needs our help.

The Georgia Meth Project has gained support from public and private sector leaders across the state, including Attorney General, Thurbert Baker.  The advertising campaign costs 6 million per year.   I firmly believe that this is a cost-effective investment in the safety of our communities and the health of our state, and, as such, IIAG needs to play a meaningful role.

I urge your agency to contribute as much as you can afford, as an investment in our families, our communities, our businesses, and our industry.

Thank you in advance for your support of this important effort.
