Volume 2, Issue 7 FEDERAL REGULATORY FINANCIAL REFORM LEGISLATION SIGNED BY PRESIDENT OBAMA
On July 21st, President Obama signed H. R. 4173, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act into law. The new law is in response to the last two years of financial crisis and is intended to produce profound changes and additional consumer protection oversight in certain financial sectors.
Even with the sweeping reforms contained in the law, the insurance industry has been left relatively unscathed and untouched. Congress did not dismantle state regulation of insurance and this represented a significant victory for independent agents. The Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America (IIABA) was the chief association leader in achieving these victories!!
One of the industry’s major accomplishments in the new law is the inclusion of regulation of surplus lines brokers and insurers with much needed reform by eliminating duplication of state regulations and placing regulatory control in the insurers’ home state. This provision is a major component of the “Big I’s” targeted federal regulatory reform policy!!
