State Farm Outbids GEICO as Advertiser in DMV Program (September 26, 2006) — IIABNY has learned that State Farm is now the sole insurance provider participating in the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles advertising program. A DMV official confirmed that State Farm outbid GEICO earlier this year for the right to include its advertising inserts with the department's vehicle registration and license renewal notices. GEICO had been the program's sole insurance provider since its inception in 2003. IIABNY opposes the insurance ads on the grounds that they constitute an implied endorsement, despite DMV's disclaimer, of a company providing a service required by government regulators. Top of page Opposition Continues to Mount Against Practice (August 28, 2006) — IIABNY welcomes the Professional Insurance Agents of New York recent announcement that it is also seeking to end the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles pactice of mailing auto insurer ads with its vehicle registration and license renewal notices. IIABNY, which continues to receive member complaints about the DMV program, has opposed the ads from the beginning when they first introduced as part of a pilot program in 2003. The association has expressed member concerns about the program with DMV officials and Gov. George Pataki's legal staff over the past three years and will continue to pursue a suitable resolution despite the department's steadfast reluctance to drop the insurer ads.
