IIABNY Asks AG to Probe 'DMV' Web Site
(March 29, 2007) — A Web site that closely resembles the official New York Department of Motor Vehicles site has prompted IIABNY to ask state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's office to investigate. The site, which is owned by eDriver Inc., includes a graphic of the official New York State Seal on its Home Page. The title bar that appears at the top of the page reads "NY DMV - NY DMV Department of Motor Vehicles Guide - DMV.ORG." Advertising that includes links to Progressive Direct and GEICO are also featured on the Home Page. Lastly, a disclaimer at the bottom of the page disavowing any connection with the New York DMV, states the site "does not claim responsibility for the accuracy of the information displayed herein."
The site, IIABNY believes, could confuse and mislead consumers who believe they are on the DMV's official Web site. The association will keep members informed on the attorney's general's response to our inquiry.
