Agency and Carrier Work Together to Encourage Insurance Careers
Rose & Kiernan, Inc. and Travelers Insurance designate $10,000 in insurance scholarships.

Rose & Kiernan Inc. and Travelers Insurance have committed $10,000 in scholarships for students at Hudson Valley Community College pursing insurance-focused business degrees.

Rose & Kiernan, an East Greenbush, N.Y. property and casualty insurance agency, partnered with Travelers to provide two $1,000 scholarships per year for the next five years. The first scholarships will be awarded in December 2009 to new students seeking an associate’s degree in business administration with an insurance focus.

John Murray, president & CEO of Rose & Kiernan and an InVEST board member, worked with Hudson Valley Community College and InVEST to begin a comprehensive insurance curriculum. The online curriculum, which takes two years and earns students an associate’s degree, was first offered in the fall of 2007 to students who complete accredited requirements in insurance, ethics, English, accounting and more.

“By being involved with this program, we do have a leg up. Our goal is to hire the best and brightest coming through this InVEST program to be members of our firm,” said Murray.

InVEST, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is dedicated to improving insurance literacy and attracting new talent to the industry. The program promotes a flexible high school and community college curriculum to prepare fresh talent for insurance careers.
