Association Information:

The Independent Insurance Agents’ Association of Montana (IIAM) was originally established in 1932 as the Montana Association of Insurance Agents, with the express purpose of uniting agents in the insurance business to lobby and protect members from adverse legislation.

IIAM was organized to promote and encourage professional development through communications and education among local insurance agents. IIAM encourages professional risk management and professional insurance services to the public and supports principles and practices which best serve the public interest.

IIAM is a member driven association. It is the largest Montana insurance producer association, serving 112 agency members and their satellites. All personnel within these agencies are members of the association. This makes the number of members in IIAM about 800 people.

The  Montana Insurance Education Foundation   (MIEF) was founded in 1966 as the educational arm of the Independent Insurance Agents’ Association of Montana. MIEF is a nonprofit corporation established to foster, encourage, and develop educational facilities as well as to disseminate educational information and materials, educational aid programs, research projects, seminars, courses of instruction, scholarships and additional activities to promote, sustain and enhance insurance education within the State of Montana. The MIEF is an autonomous organization.

Currently the MIEF administers two insurance industry-specific continuing education scholarship programs, a college scholarship program, an agency internship, and an annual fund-raising golf tournament.

The purpose of The   Montana Surplus Lines Agents’ Association, Inc. (MSLAA) is to foster, protect and promote the welfare, interest and business of all persons licensed as surplus lines producers. It serves as a central agency to combine the intelligence and influence of members against imposition and fraud. MSLAA institutes programs and disseminates information of the interests of the insuring public. MSLAA maintains liaisons between producers and the Commissioner of Insurance of the State of Montana in respect of all laws of the State, and all rules, regulations and orders promulgated by the commissioner affecting or relating to producers.

Public Risk Insurance Management, Inc. (PRIM) is a for-profit corporation organized by and for the Independent Insurance Agents' Association of Montana in 1975, and is licensed in the State of Montana. PRIM was formed to conduct the business of, but is not limited to, the wholesale and retail sales of products and sale of services, and includes the services of an insurance agent. PRIM is dedicated to the importance of taxpayers' interest in risk and insurance management in government.

To accomplish these objectives in serving the IIAM membership, PRIM provides financial and other management services through management agreements with the Independent Insurance Agents’ Association of Montana, The Montana Surplus Lines Agents’ Association, and the Montana Insurance Education Foundation. IIAM owns 100% of the outstanding stock of PRIM.

The Mountain Plains Alliance (MPA) was formed in 1997 by a strategic alliance of North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, Montana, Idaho and Alaska. The goals of the MPA are to collectively accomplish improved membership services that the individual states may not be able to accomplish as well on an individual basis. The MPA is currently working on a number of membership services, activities and benefits.
