Remember, “Star Search”, the wonderfully produced show that aired from 1983 – 1995 and hosted by Ed McMahon? (Let us not forget the reluanch from 2002-2004…or maybe we should). Anywho – if you do remember the show you might also remember the six categories of competition:
- Male vocalist
- Female vocalist
- Junior vocalist
- Vocal group
- Spokesmodel
- Comedy
Well, here at YAC headquarters we’d like to give Ed a call, reinstate the show and add a category…drum roll…you guessed it…YAC! We’ll leave out naming someone “champion” or “challenger” and simply applaud and cheer the following states for some recent accomplishments. What do Young Agents Value About Being Independent? Michigan: For Red Wings fans…sorry about the Stanley Cup loss. For Michigan YAC fans – congrats on an event well done! On May 30th, 83 YAC’s, MAIA staff, family, friends, and company sponsors participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Michigan YAC’s currently raised $4,500 towards breast cancer research. (Contributions can me be made until July 1) Money was raised from donations, company sponsors, and a raffle from their Young Agents Conference. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and breast cancer research. This is a great example of how Young Agents can be involved in the community – and you don’t have to win the Stanley Cup to do it! Awesome stuff Michigan YAC’s!

Nevada: There’s more to Nevada than Las Vegas – there’s Young Agents! The Nevada Association is working hard to revitalize their Young Agents program. The “Nevada Young Agents Networking” event was held on June 23 with a mixture of practical information and fun, which made for great networking opportunities for Young Agents. The program consisted of motivational speaker, Chip Eichelberger, an “Ask the Pro” session with a panel of Nevada agents and ended with Wii Bowling and pizza. Viva Nevada Young Agents!
Georgia: Georgia is not only good for their peaches – they are also good for their YACs! The Georgia YAC has a great newsletter titled, YAC-YAK (we dig it). Everything from a Chairman’s note, outlook for 2009 insurance market status in relation to new producers, YA opportunities and a clever ad for InsurPac contributions; this newsletter has something for everyone!
Illinois: And speaking of noteworthy newsletters…a shout out goes to Illinois for their own, “The Advocate”. Articles include legislative updates (“Bye Bye Blago,” a personal favorite) products and services, YA events/activities information and the opportunity to join the Illinois Young Insurance Agents group on Facebook. And while it may not have been encouraged in English courses, here at YAC Chat we promote a good old fashioned copy and paste. The Advocate utilized an article from the Winter edition of YAC Chat about LC&C and used it in their February newsletter. Illinois proved that YAC Chat can do some of the work for you – feel free to use our articles!
Kansas: Lions…and…dinosuars…and Kansas YACs – oh my! The Young Agents Committee of Kansas awarded their annual Safety Grant award to Marshall County Community Resource & Education Center. The center is home to multiple agencies helping families and children achieve independence. The $400 grant will assist in purchasing 50 copies of the safety guide, “Dinosaurs Beware!” These books will be given to the Marshall County Community Resource & Education Center for Early Childhood Specialists to read at area daycare providers and preschools while teaching 60 safety tips to children. Icing on the cake: Trusted Choice agent Lynn Stohs with Blue Valley Insurance Agencies, Inc. gave an additional $100 toward the grant. Kudos to Kansas! North Carolina Congratulations to the Young Agents Committee of the Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina for completing their Habitat for Humanity project! After raising $70,000 in less than a year and completing construction in five months, the YAC handed the keys over to the happy homeowners on Aug. 23, 2008. An ice cream truck was part of the celebration which enabled the family to meet their new neighbors. Associate member Tammy Little from CRC Services in High Point, N.C. also donated furniture and decorated the living room and dining room. Great work North Carolina Young Agents! Indiana Let’s hear it for the Young Agents Committee of the Independent Insurance Agents of Indiana, Inc for unveiling their new and improved Young Agents Web site! The new site, which is receiving outstanding feedback for its easy-to-use design, is a product of the Indiana YAC’s communications sub-committee and steering committee. Creative help and constructing of the site came from recent Young Agent, Jennifer Kostello of Secura Insurance Companies and Young Agents staff liaison, Steve Duff. Click here to check it out! Virginia A big, “Hurray!” goes to Shannon Harding Dooley of Hubbard Insurance Agency, Inc., for being recognized as the 2008 Young Agent of the Year at the Virginia Young Agents conference in Williamsburg, Virginia. She enjoys working at Hubbard because it is a small agency that focuses on personal service above all. The Young Agents Program is very important to Shannon because of the opportunities it provides for career growth. By taking part in the program she has a say in what the future of the insurance industry will be. Florida: During the 2008 Florida Association of Insurance Agents (FAIA) Convention Young Agents held events with outstanding representation. The Young Agents reception attracted 200 Young Agents, and Young Agents sponsors. The Young Agents luncheon was a success with IIABA President & CEO Bob Rusbuldt, Trusted Choice Executive Director Dave Evans, and FAIA President & CEO Jeff Grady in attendance among the Young Agents attendees. IIABA Immediate Past Chairman, Alex Soto also spoke to Young Agents during the event. The Young Agents booth in the exhibit hall was a "must see" with attendees enjoying the Hawaiian theme and enthusiasm of Young Agents promoting membership.
Excellent job Florida Young Agents Council for planning this wonderful event!
